week 3 brainstorming exercise (sticky notes)

I started the brainstorming exercise by thinking of general categories which my project falls under. This general approach sparked some inspiration and led me to think of other ideas that had not previously crossed my mind during other thesis brainstorming sessions.

By initially creating categories in conjucntion with other specific ideas, the grouping process was more systematic. I chose the sticky notes which were the most broad based, and began categorizing other specific concepts under them. The physical process of moving the notes together forces you think how are individual ideas relate to each other and paints a clearer picture as to what big idea you are trying to manifest.

Below are shots of the first ideation stage, grouping stage and the specific grouping categories which are devices, disruption, individual, micro-processing, social network:

About Tom Lawrie

My areas of interest are: personal data - ability to see how data translates over time (quantified self), simple interface - design where users begin interaction without explicit direction, social - create something people can use and share, product development - I want to push beyond software; ubiquitous computing, connect objects to the web using software My thesis work will begin with ideation, research, prototypes and user testing evolving around these key areas with the hope of ending the semester with a final prototype leading me to what will become a finalized product/design.
